Pain Relieving Chili Plaster
Introduction
There are loads of drugs that are already in your medicine cabinet containing
active ingredients that come from plants. Pharmaceutical companies have been
using Mother Nature’s cupboard for years but we have lost this knowledge. I am
going to show you which plant to use for herbal remedies, and I will put this
knowledge back into your hands.
Plants For Healing
You can use all types of plants to treat common ailments, but in this article I
am going to be focusing on the healing properties of vegetables. Most people think about vegetables as something
that's exclusively edible and has no medicinal benefits, the kind of thing you
stick along with your Sunday roasts just for taste. However, hidden in the
plants are a whole host of really exciting chemicals. It's just about harnessing
them correctly. A lot of people ask me what is an herb, what is a vegetable,
what is a fruit, where are the dividing lines? A vegetable is pretty much anything you can
eat that comes from a plant source. It is really a culturally defined term. You do
not need a green thumb or a science lab to grow your own veggies, supplying your
own remedies. It's easy, it's cheap, it's natural, and it's really good for you!
We all have felt the aches, pains and muscle injuries, but for active athletic people it can be a weekly occurrence. And believe
it or not you can relieve your aches and pains with one natural ingredient:
chili. I am going to show you how to spice things up with the pain relieving
chili plaster!!
Chilies Are More Than Hot
Most people just think about chilies as maybe the big fat red chilies or the
green ones in the supermarket, but there are just so many other types of peppers
out there. And some could be much hotter than others, like to the point of
almost being dangerous to eat. Pepper heat is measured on
the scoville scale. The higher the number of units on the scoville scale, the spicier the chili
will be.
Jalapenos you might see sliced up on the top of your pizza are about ten
thousand scoville units. The hottest chili at the moment in the world originates from Northern India,
and is called the ghost pepper. The ghost pepper measures at just over
one million scoville units! Ouch!
Substance P
There is a chemical in chili called capsaicin and as well as giving them their
hot taste, it can be used to relieve pain when applied to the skin.
Substance P is a small peptide that is released in the body when the body needs
to deal with the body's pain threshold and is emitted by the nervous system.
Substance P helps the body cope with pain naturally. Some
pharmaceutical pain relieving creams contain it which attests the powerful
nature of this naturally occurring chemical.
Capsaicin gives them the heat
you taste. The more capsaicin contained in the pepper, the spicier and higher
amount of scoville units. When applied to the skin, peppers
cause substance P to be created which is a pain transmitting chemical that is released from the nerve
endings. Once these transmitters are gone, the pain is relieved. Peppers produce a
warming sensation, reduce pain, and also are a great anti-inflammatory. So it
works in three different ways to combat body pain.
Pepper Plasters
So for these plasters we will be using Scotch bonnet chillies and they are about
fifty thousand scoville units. These scotch bonnet can be grown really easily at
home as you can get them from the nursery, and they are available in some
supermarkets.
Recipe as follows:
Recipe Ingredients
- 200 gm Chillies
- 200 gm Coconut Oil
- 12 tablespoon Mustard Powder
- 6 teaspoon Beeswax
- 6 Cotton Pads
- Rice or wax paper
- Adhesive dressing
Put the pan on heat and add 200 grams of finely chopped chilies. Then add 200
grams of coconut oil. Coconut oil is a kind of oil that sets at room temperature,
but once heated it turns into a liquid very quickly. Also add dozen tablespoons of mustard
powder, and leave it on very low heat. You will notice the coconut oil starts to
melt and the vapor from the chilies starts to escape. Let it simmer for a couple of
minutes, and stir the mixture regularly.
Now switch off the heat and grab a sieve, pouring the mixture so that it will
run through it.
With the help of a big spoon, press the mixture through the sieve. Basically it's just
about pressing and extracting the oil from the mixture, and doing it correctly.
Your oil should now have the
active chemicals we are looking for as they are infused with the oil.
Now add six teaspoons of beeswax to the sieved mixture. Beeswax will help the
mixture to set. You can buy this from a herbal supplier keeping in mind there
are tons of great brands out there that make great organic honey. Put this mixture on
heat for a couple of minutes and wait until the beeswax melts.
Now dip the cotton pads in the mixture while it is still hot. The mixture
will start to get solid as it starts to cool down. Put the dipped cotton pads on
the rice or wax paper to avoid sticking to the surface, and let it cool down. And
now your chilly cotton pads are ready to use.
They are quite hardcore in terms of dosage, so they are very effective.
Directions
Put the cold chili plaster on the affected area, and put the adhesive dressing on
the chili pad so that it stays affixed to the affected area. Before bed by
applying one pad and leaving it over night, many skin conditions can be soothed
naturally and effectively.
Caution
Do
not use these pads on sensitive, broken or inflamed skin. Also avoid touching
the eyes and always wash your hands immediately after handling them. And do not
forget to do a 24 hour patch test to check for any allergies before you try any
of the ingredients on the rest of your body.
Storage
Keep the cotton pads in an air tight container up to a month in a cool dry
place.
Benefits
This is a natural chemical free remedy for muscular aches and pains. You will
find the pain will subside and the affected area will be loosened.
