Lip Balm To Soothe Cold Sores
Introduction
I am going to turn lemon balm leaves into a soothing lip balm to treat cold
sores. If you want to grow your own drugs; herbs are the easiest place to start
and you do not have to be green fingered or have a huge garden to give it a go.
With a clever planting choice even on a tiny kitchen window sill you can have
four decent species giving you a living medicinal kit that will last you all
year round. If you are looking for easy to grow herbs you can’t go wrong with
lavender to help you sleep, sage for treating cold and flu, rosemary
traditionally used for circulation and lemon balm with antiviral properties.
The Awesomeness Of Lemon Balm
Lemon balm is an absolutely brilliant herb to have in your garden. As the name
suggests it has a really fizzy lemon flavor. Lemon balm spreads like a weed so
you have to cut it back.
It's the perfect excuse to use it in cold sores remedy. Lemon Balm has being
used for all sorts of disorders from calming drinks for the stomach to relaxant
tea actually it's most famous use is really as an antiviral. You can take for
coughs and colds but also for treating things like cold sores. Cold sores affect
one in five of us and the one of life's most embarrassing afflictions.
How To Deal With Cold Sores
Lemon Balm contains essential oil and polyphenolic acids which have antiviral
properties. These combined together help to reduce inflammation and the viral
causes of the cold sore. I have come up with a recipe which is one hundred
percent natural. People think lip balm is really difficult to make, it’s
basically oil with tiny bit of wax to make it thick. The key is to get goodness
out of the leaves into the oil which is the basis of lip balm.
Recipe as Follows:
Ingredients
- 21 chopped tablespoons of Lemon Balm leaves
- 3 and half tablespoons Wheat germ oil
- 3 and half tablespoons Olive Oil
- 1 tablespoon Beeswax
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 5 drops tea tree oil
Give a quick rinse to the lemon balm leaves and chop them very finely and
divide them into three batches. Add the first seven tablespoons of lemon balm
leaves into a pan. Add three and a half tablespoons of wheat germ oil and three
and a half tablespoons of olive oil on the leaves and put the pan on a very low
heat. The moment you see tiny spots of bubbles appearing, you need to take it
off the heat and leave the pan to cool for ten minutes.
After ten minutes the active ingredients from the leaves will be infused into
the oil. Strain the liquid thorough a sieve and squeeze the leaves with your
fingers to get most of the oil out of them.
Go On – Get Your Hands Messy
This is my favorite bit about it, making the mess and getting all your hands
slimy and covered without any of this it wouldn’t be any fun.
Put the strained oil back in the pan and add next batch of lemon balm leaves
and repeat the process two more times. Basically you are adding the second batch
of leaves into already strained leaves and giving it some heat. Take it off, let
it cool down, strain and squeeze. Repeat the process again with the third batch
of leaves. After the third process you will have concentrated oil.
To turn this into a luscious lip balm put it back on a low heat add a
tablespoon of beeswax which you can
find in a health food shop and tablespoon of
honey. By adding some honey, it does two things; it has a functional benefit
because it helps speeds the healing of the wound and it is naturally an
antiviral. But equally as important is it gives the lip balm a decent flavor.
Keep stirring until the beeswax is melted. You will start to see a little bit
of foam start to appear at top of the surface and that’s when you know oil is
thickening and the wax completely disappears. Take off the heat and add five drops of tea tree oil which will help preserve
your lip balm. Before the liquid sets pour it into a jar. As it cools down it
will change color and It will begin to look lot more like a lip balm. In less
than ten minutes it will set.
Direction
The lip balm can be applied to the affected area as soon as you feel a cold sore
is coming on and until it goes away. Also do a patch test for 24 hours.
Final Words
Basically you have created a lip balm from stuff in your back garden and it
will last well over six months in the fridge. Plants with benefits are growing
all around us, it’s just knowing how to use them.
