Health Benefits of Inositol Supplements

Bottle of Inositol SupplementsInositol supplements have many health benefits to patients who take it and it helps to manage excess stress, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, liver problems, and diabetes. Furthermore, supplements containing inositol reverse the effects of drinking coffee and from the prolonged use of antibiotics. Inositol is a member of vitamin B-complex. It is sometimes referred to as vitamin B8. However, it is not a real vitamin because bacteria in the intestines can synthesize it from glucose. It occurs naturally as a glucose isomer. Inositol is a basic component of body cells and is necessary for their growth, especially cells of the intestines, eye membranes, and bone marrow. It combines with other nutrients to enhance cell interactions and provides those who take it with many incredible health benefits. Even though the body synthesizes inositol on its own and obtains it from some foods, supplements improve and increase these benefits as well as delivering a much more concentrated dose.

This article describes fourteen benefits of inositol.

  1. The Break Down of Fats
It breaks down fats and prevents fatty deposits from building up in the cell walls of the brain, arteries, liver, and heart. It combines with choline to produce lecithin, a substance that emulsifies fats and maintains them in liquid suspension. The body easily expels emulsified fats and cholesterol. Therefore, inositol helps prevent diseases associated with the accumulation of fats and cholesterol in the body, especially cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, it prevents accumulation of fats in the liver when it combines with methionine, folacin, betaine, choline, and Vitamins B-6 and B-12. Therefore, it enhances the functioning of essential body organs: the brain, arteries, liver, and heart.

  2. Reduces Blood Clotting
blood clottingInositol reduces blood clots, associated with high risk of heart diseases, by preventing blood platelets from being sticky.

  3. Enhances the Health of Cell Membranes
This enables the cell membrane to function efficiently. Inositol and choline are the basic components of cell membranes. The cell membrane regulates the cell contents allowing certain materials to pass through while others are blocked and protects them from oxidation. Therefore, inositol is important for proper functioning of specialized cells in the intestines, eyes, bone marrow, and brain. Furthermore, inositol and choline are the main components of the membrane that forms the protective sheath around the brain.

  4. Aids Neuron Functionality
It enhances the functions of neurons in the central nervous system. Neurotransmitters, such as serotonin in the brain, depend on inositol to function properly. Inositol forms the myelin sheath that surrounds and insulates the nerves and regulates nerve transmission.

    Neuron Functionality

It enhances healing of damaged nerves. Furthermore, it is a brain food because it combines with choline to provide brain cell nutrition.

  5. Prevents Arterial Plaque
Artery PlaqueBy checking and reversing damage to the linings of blood vessels, inositol prevents the formation of plaque. Damage to these linings causes growth of arterial plaques, which block the arteries and cause them to harden and narrow. Hard and narrow arteries cause high blood pressure and ultimately stroke or heart attack. Furthermore, inositol breaks down cholesterol and prevents it from accumulating to high levels that cause plaque buildups and clots.

  6. It Works as an Antidepressant
Inositol prevents panic attacks and depression by forming two important brain neurotransmitters in the nervous system and brain: acetylcholine and serotonin. These substances have many antidepressant properties. Depression patients usually have low amounts of inositol. Inositol helps treat mood swings and depression because serotonin enhances the effectiveness of mood stabilizers. Therefore, people who use inositol supplements have a lower risk of suffering from mental illnesses.

    Antidepressant

Furthermore, inositol supplements calm patients of insomnia, control bipolar disorder, and reduce obsessive/compulsive disorder (OCD).

  7. Antioxidant Properties
Antioxidant and immune-stimulating properties are active within the supplement which are beneficial for curing and preventing cancer. Researchers have found that a combination of inositol and phytic acid forms substances that can cure or prevent cancer. Research indicates that inositol hexaphosphate reduces the spread and growth of cancer cells. Results of many studies show a link between high fiber diets and a lower incidence of cancer because fiber contains high amounts of inositol. Furthermore, it helps prevent breast lumps associated with high levels of the hormone estrogen because inositol is effective at controlling hormone levels in the body.

  8. More Active Cells
A decrease in nerve function common in diabetic patients occurs when the amounts of inositol in the cells is low. Such decrease in nerve functions usually cause numbness and pain due to degeneration. Furthermore, inositol supplements are effective in treating diabetic neuropathy, a complication caused by diabetes.

    Active Cells

Inositol makes the patient more sensitive to insulin, enhancing the body's absorption of creatine, a nitrogenous organic acid that boosts cell energy supply. However, inositol does not cure diabetes but it does effectively control symptoms.

  9. Helps Constipation
Alimentary canal and intestinal muscles relax when the level of inositol is low. Constipation occurs when these muscles are relaxed. An inositol supplement can stimulate these muscles and eases constipation.

  10. Promotes Hair Growth
Man looking at hair loseIt is a component of human hair and as a type vitamin B-complex, it naturally helps to stimulate hair growth. It makes hair healthy and strong. Inositol can even make hair grow faster. In fact, a mixture of inositol, foliate and vitamin B12 reverses hair loss and delays the onset of baldness.

  11. Better Respiration
Improvements in respiration have been seen in newborn babies who are having difficulty breathing. Inositol supplements prevent death, eye problems, brain bleeding, and lung complications in newborn babies when taken by mothers during pregnancy.

  12. Healthy Skin
Inositol helps maintain healthy skin by preventing and treating eczema, a skin disease characterized by swelling and inflammation.

  13. Reverses Symptoms Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Studies have shown that inositol improves symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women. Inositol can even help to decrease infertility issues. By reversing the effects of PCOS, patients record significant weight loss and increased HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

  14. Lowers Cholesterol
Inositol supplements are effective in treating metabolic syndrome in women by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

    Lowers Cholesterol

It is especially effective in postmenopausal women who may be at risk for heart disease.

Basic foods supply the body with enough inositol to be beneficial. Foods rich in inositol include brown rice, liver, pork, beans, oats, bananas, citrus fruits, some nuts, brewer’s yeast, and lentils. However, dieting or avoiding these foods in addition to the prolonged use of antibiotics, can lead to deficiency symptoms. Antibiotics deplete inositol as well as biotin and vitamins K, B12, B6, B3, B2, and B1. Further, because coffee destroys inositol, people who drink more than two cups per day are at risk of developing deficiency symptoms. These symptoms include narrowing and hardening of arteries, eye abnormalities, excess fat in the liver, patchy baldness or hair loss, high cholesterol levels, memory loss, constipation, and eczema. By taking an inositol supplement and monitoring your diet, deficiency symptoms can be avoided.
